Salvation Is by Grace, Not by Works

Series: Daily Light from the Word — Day 4

Scripture Reading:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.”
— Titus 3:5 (KJV)

The Gift We Could Never Earn

Grace is one of the sweetest words in all of Scripture. It means unearned favor. Salvation is not something we achieve — it is something God gives. We do not climb our way to heaven through good works, religious effort, or moral improvement. Salvation is a gift, purchased by Christ and offered freely to all who believe.

Our natural tendency is to try to earn approval. Yet God’s Word reminds us that salvation is “not of yourselves.” It is entirely His work. Christ paid the full price for sin. Nothing needs to be added. Nothing can be improved upon.

Resting in What Christ Has Done

If salvation depended on our performance, we would live in constant fear of failure. But because salvation rests on Christ’s finished work, we can live in assurance and peace. Grace humbles us because we did nothing to deserve it. Grace strengthens us because it reminds us that God’s mercy is greater than our weakness.

Good works do not produce salvation — salvation produces good works. A heart changed by grace desires to honor the Lord who saved it.

Living in Gratitude

Today is an opportunity to reflect on the grace that saved you. When guilt whispers that you are not enough, remember that Christ is enough. When pride tempts you to boast in your goodness, remember that salvation is a gift.

Grace removes boasting and replaces it with gratitude. It replaces fear with confidence in Christ. It replaces striving with trust.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation through grace. I confess that I cannot earn what only Christ could provide. Help me rest in His finished work. Guard my heart from pride and from doubt. Let Your grace produce humility, gratitude, and obedience in my life today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
