The Meaning of Repentance

Series: Daily Light from the Word — Day 5

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”
— Acts 3:19 (KJV)

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of.”
— 2 Corinthians 7:10 (KJV)

A Change of Heart

Repentance is often misunderstood. It is more than feeling sorry for sin, and it is more than making temporary changes. True repentance is a change of heart and mind toward sin and toward God. It is turning from sin and turning toward Christ.

When the Gospel is preached, repentance is part of the response God calls for. It is the recognition that we have sinned against a holy God and that we cannot save ourselves. Repentance humbles us and prepares our hearts to trust fully in Christ.

Godly Sorrow

There is a difference between worldly regret and godly sorrow. Worldly sorrow is concerned with consequences. Godly sorrow is concerned with sin itself. It grieves over offending God and desires restoration with Him.

This kind of repentance is not self-produced. It is the work of God in the heart. When the Holy Spirit convicts, He leads the sinner to see the seriousness of sin and the beauty of grace.

Repentance and Faith

Repentance and faith go together. When a person turns from sin, they turn toward Christ. Repentance is not adding works to salvation; it is the inward change that accompanies genuine faith. Salvation is still by grace through faith alone, but true faith includes a heart that no longer clings to sin.

Repentance does not mean perfection. It means direction. The believer’s life is no longer aimed toward self, but toward the Lord.

A Continual Attitude

Repentance is not only part of conversion—it becomes part of the Christian life. As believers grow, they remain sensitive to sin and quick to seek forgiveness. A tender heart before God is evidence of spiritual life.

Each new day is an opportunity to walk in humility, turning away from what dishonors God and turning toward what pleases Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy that calls me to repentance. Search my heart and reveal anything that displeases You. Give me a humble spirit that turns quickly from sin and trusts fully in Christ. Help me walk in obedience and gratitude today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
