Firstfruits — Christ’s Resurrection and the Promise of New Life

Christ in the Biblical Feasts — Week 4

Key Scripture

“Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest.”
— Leviticus 23:10 (KJV)

“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV)

Historical Background

The Feast of Firstfruits was observed during the early harvest season. The people of Israel were commanded to bring the first portion of their harvest to the Lord as an offering. This act acknowledged that the entire harvest belonged to God and expressed trust that He would provide the rest.

The offering of the firstfruits was both an act of worship and a declaration of faith in God’s continued provision.

Prophetic Meaning

The firstfruits offering pointed forward to something greater than a physical harvest. It symbolized the beginning of a greater harvest yet to come. The first portion guaranteed that more would follow.

This feast revealed a future reality: God would provide a resurrection, and the first to rise would be the guarantee of many more to come.

Fulfillment in Christ

Jesus Christ fulfilled the Feast of Firstfruits through His resurrection from the dead. Scripture declares that He is the “firstfruits” of those who have died. His resurrection was not an isolated event, but the beginning of a greater resurrection to come.

Just as the firstfruits offering pointed to a coming harvest, Christ’s resurrection guarantees that all who belong to Him will also be raised. His victory over death assures the believer’s future hope.

Application for Christians Today

Christians are not commanded to observe the Feast of Firstfruits, but its meaning strengthens our understanding of the resurrection. Because Christ lives, believers have the assurance of eternal life.

This truth provides hope in the face of death and confidence in God’s promises. The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of the believer’s faith and the guarantee of future glory.

Summary

The Feast of Firstfruits celebrated the beginning of the harvest and pointed forward to a greater fulfillment in Christ. Through His resurrection, Jesus became the firstfruits of those who will be raised to life.

His resurrection guarantees the future resurrection of all who trust in Him, giving believers a living hope and assurance of eternal life.
